De-Risking NPD for SME’s

NPD is a risky business for any company but SME’s can’t afford the luxury of having over 50% of their new products failing. That is why there are lessons for SME’s be learnt from the disciplines used by the larger FMCG manufacturers such as the use of Stage Gate Approach to NPD combined with Critical Processes and Paths. SME’s can adapt these models to suit their businesses. Given that the management teams are likely to be considerably smaller and flatter, models which are less complex and onerous, tend to be more effective.

Myself and some of the other members of the Levercliff team have been working with Keogh’s for the past 12 months, helping to bring some of these disciplines into the business and ensure new products are launched on time and achieve healthy sales rates because the concepts and then products have been checked and reviewed at each Gate before moving forward. Its been great to work with the team headed by Tom Keogh in Dublin, particularly on the development and launch of Keogh’s new range of Crinkle Crisps and hugely satisfying to see how well these new crisps are performing.
