NESTA Reformulation

Challenge

Scottish Enterprise aimed to identify Scottish-manufactured products that could be reformulated to reduce calories, while maintaining - or even increasing - the expected and actual satiety of foods.

Approach

We conducted retail audits to identify leading Scottish brands and analysed sales, nutritional data, and consumer attitudes to pinpoint priority reformulation targets. We then benchmarked against healthier products to create category-specific recommendations for reformulation.

Outcome

We identified priority targets for reformulation and developed actionable strategies, including ingredient substitution, portion control, and fibre/protein enrichment. We also highlighted opportunities for introducing healthier product tiers and leveraging on-pack health messaging to drive innovation and consumer engagement.
